Florence Eats - Truffle Cream Gnocchi at Osteria Santo Spirito
Have you ever bitten into a bite of creamy to die for molten lava in the shape of Gnocchi? If not, you just haven’t lived! If not, then you must make your way to Osteria Santo Spirito the next time you are in Florence!
Gnocchi is a dish I absolutely relish! So when I heard about this Osteria that was known for their gnocchi in a truffle cream sauce, I knew we had to try it when we were in Florence. We didn’t have a reservation, which was probably a little risky considering how much I was looking forward to trying this but it worked out for us to get a table. They were very kind and sat us before an existing reservation because we had small kids and we promised it wouldn’t be a long dinner for us. A reservation is probably a must though especially in any touristy time of the year. For a restaurant in the historic center they have a pretty good amount of tables inside. They also have dining outside for you to enjoy!
Osteria Santo Spirito sits in the charming Santo Spirito piazza in the Oltrarno quarter of Florence. Its atmosphere is kind of dark and moody but beautiful and the staff was helpful and kind. It felt very much like a place a family, a couple or a group of friends could all happily sit down to dine and stay for hours. Their menu is filled with local Tuscan dishes like Bistecca alla Fiorentina, Trippa alla Fiornetina, Pappa al Pomodoro, Ribollita and others. They also have a long list of local wines to choose from. Our kids had their favorite dish, spaghetti with olive oil. Justin and I had the dish we came there to enjoy…a gorgeous plate of Gnocchi in a truffle cream sauce. It was divine! Creamy and rich and the gnocchi was the perfect texture. It was everything my tastebuds dreamed it would be. And it has stood out in my mind ever since we first went there 5 years ago. If there was anything bad to say about it at all, it would be that it truly may have been the same temperature as lava…haha! Even with the extreme temperature, I highly recommend it and this restaurant!
Recently I created this delicious rich and creamy dish at home. I have dreamed about having it many times since this restaurant but it always felt like it would be too time consuming. When I was gifted a little jar of Italian truffles as a house warming gift I knew it was a sign that is was finally time to try it! We made our gnocchi at home which added a good amount of time to the recipe but just the cooking of the gnocchi and putting the sauce and dish together turned out to be very very fast. If you’re not up for making gnocchi from scratch it is easy to find at the market nowadays. Either way you are going to love this dish! Recipe link and info for Osteria Santo Spirito below!
